Portville’s Cole, Ellicottville’s Edwards honored in East | News, Sports, Jobs

Portville senior Michael Cole and Ellicottville junior Sam Edwards were recently named Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association East Division boys soccer co-Players of the Year.

Cole led the league and Section VI Class C champion Panthers with 15 goals to go along with eight assists while Edwards had a team-high 24 goals and 14 assists for the Section VI Class D champion Eagles.

Randolph freshman Cooper Freeman was named the league’s Offensive Most Valuable Player after scoring 18 goals to go along with a team-high 21 assists for the Cardinals.

Portville senior Cole Faulkner and Falconer/Cassadaga Valley senior Carson Olson were named co-Defensive Most Valuable Players. Faulkner scored seven goals while also anchoring a Panthers back line that allowed just 24 goals in 19 games. Olson was the goalkeeper for a Golden Cougars team that allowed 24 goals and piled up 95 saves in 17 games, including four clean sheets.

Portville’s JJ McIntosh was named the league’s Coach of the Year, Salamanca/Cattaraugus-Little Valley received the Team Sportsmanship Award with senior Andy Herrick the Individual Sportsmanship Award winner, and Jerome Lee Yaw was named the Referee of the Year.

Joining Cole and Faulkner on the First Team from Portville were sophomore midfielder Brady German and junior defender Simon Szymanski. German had seven goals and a team-high 10 assists while Szymanski had three goals and four assists.

Sophomore Ben Edwards was also named to the First Team from Ellicottville after a two-assist campaign on a defense that allowed 26 goals in 18 games.

Joining Olson on the First Team from Cassadaga Valley/Falconer were senior forward Alex Reynolds, junior midfielder Ethyn Gilbert and junior defender Finley Pavlock. Reynolds had a team-high 18 goals to go along with seven assists; Gilbert had five goals and a team-high eight assists; and Pavlock anchored the Golden Cougars defense.

Randolph sophomore Griffin Nelson rounded out the First Team with Freeman. Nelson had a team-high 21 goals to go along with 12 assists for the Cardinals.
